EMDR

What is EMDR?

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, addresses trauma by utilizing bilateral stimulation, which mimics the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage. The bilateral stimulation can be facilitated with rhythmic eye movements, tapping, or with alternating audio tones. Using bilateral stimulation is thought to activate the brain's natural information processing system, allowing the traumatic memory to be desensitized and integrated with healthier emotional responses.  EMDR is able to address trauma at the root by reprocessing the traumatic memory, and is believed to help decrease emotional intensity while also changing the negative beliefs associated with the memory. EMDR therapy utilizes a three-pronged approach that addresses the past, present, and future.  The goal of this approach is to help clients move forward with their lives without being negatively impacted by their past experiences.

The advantages of EMDR is that clients often experience symptom reduction and healing within 3-6 sessions. It also gives you lasting tools to ensure symptoms do not return with the same intensity as before.
